Cell Biology Curriculum

The UTMB Cell Biology Graduate Program (CBGP) is based on a multidisciplinary curriculum with emphasis on the translational importance of cell biology in the study and treatment of disease. Faculty in our program have broad interests which include specific strengths in the following:

  • Neuronal Cell Biology: development, trauma, regeneration, neurodegenerative diseases, vision and other areas
  • Reproductive and Placental Biology
  • Neuroimmunology
  • Nutrition and Metabolism
  • Stem Cells/Wound Healing and Cancer
  • Infectious and Immune disease, and role of Microbiota
  • Cellular response to drugs and toxins

Cell Biology A distinguishing feature of the CBGP curriculum is that it is designed to be flexible so that each student can tailor their coursework to suit their field of interest. In the first year students will take the required courses Biochemistry, Cell Biology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics. In addition, elective courses in any discipline totaling 6 hours are completed. While taking courses, students rotate in at least three research labs to identify a potential thesis mentor. In the second year students spend most of their time in the lab, but also take an advanced cell biology course, a grant writing course, and prepare to enter candidacy by writing a research proposal and defending it orally. Completion of the CBGP is expected to take 4 to 5 years.
