Chief Residents' Message

Hello! Your choice of residency program will have a major effect on your next four years with a lasting impact on your future practice in this exciting and rewarding specialty. We would like to highlight a few attributes of our program that our residents felt were pivotal in their selection of UTMB for residency.
Resident satisfaction and morale is an extremely important factor in choosing residency program. Overall, our residents are hard working and upbeat. We enjoy working together and supporting one another at work as well as outside the hospital. From happy hours, team dinners, post-call brunches, running marathons, family activities, to bridal and baby showers, our residents truly live life together.
Our faculty and fellows have a strong commitment to education and mentorship. They are excellent resources for mentoring in research, in subspecialty fellowship application, and in the pursuit of private practice opportunities. There is genuine respect and camaraderie between faculty members, nursing staff, and residents.
As an academic institution, UTMB excels. All residents participate in clinical science research and quality improvement projects. Many have presented their research at subspecialty annual meetings, such ACOG, SMFM, AAGL or IDSOG. For these presenting residents, UTMB encourages scholastic achievement by covering the cost of travel and lodging. Residents also have the opportunity to participate actively in institutional leadership roles, and several residents have held positions in ACOG and CREOG.
Finally, the cost of living in Galveston is very affordable. Residents have the option of living on the island or in one of many towns within close driving distance of the island. Galveston itself has a family friendly, small community feel. There is no short supply of local restaurants and activities around town. The weather is lovely year-round, and as a result, we enjoy outdoor activities and the beach most of the year. Houston is about an hour drive north for residents who desire metropolitan entertainment, such as professional sports, museums, the zoo, concerts, theater, shopping, and dining.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. We look forward to hearing from you, whether during an interview, on AI rotation, or simply in an email.
Sincerely,
