Summer Biomedical Health Careers Academy

Academy Information

This experience provides a venue for high school students in the greater Galveston County area to explore the wide variety of biomedical and health careers available at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Participants in the career academy will spend five, full days on campus:

  1. Exploring various careers through tours, presentations and a variety of hands-on activities in state-of-the-art learning facilities in UTMB’s School of Nursing, School of Medicine, School of Health Professions and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
  2. Learning about the educational requirements for these careers, how to academically prepare for them and admission processes.
  3. Shadowing role models and more!


Open to all high school students who will be 16 years old by academy start date and who have at least a 2.5 grade point average on a four-point scale. Must have transportation to and from campus.

Note: UTMB will NOT provide housing of any kind for participants in the program. Students must live or secure housing within a 50 mile radius of UTMB. If you are outside a driving commute distance of 50 miles, please have your parent/guardian attach a letter confirming that you have secured a place of residence for this program. Also indicate how you will travel to and from campus. We will not review your application without this information. Program dates are July 8-12, 2019.

How to Apply

You must complete and submit the online application, as well as mail the supporting documentation by the indicated deadlines. The supporting documentation includes the Participation Agreement, Parental Consent Form, Information Release Statement, and Recommendation Forms. Incomplete applications will not be considered.


You must complete and submit the online application, as well as the supporting documentation, by 11:59:00 PM, Monday April 8, 2019. You are encouraged to submit your application in advance of the deadline to avoid missing the application window. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Approximately 3-4 weeks after the application deadline, acceptance and rejection letters will be emailed/mailed to the applicant’s reported address, upon committee review of the completed application and supporting documentation.
