Description
How does Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga (LVCY) differ from other chair yoga classes? In LVCY, any posture found on the mat can be replicated in the chair. This allows a participant to experience the benefits of a yoga class without having to get on the floor. It's ideal for anyone looking for ways to improve range of motion, increase circulation and build strength, without the fear of falls, or the challenges of getting to the floor. Taught by over twelve hundred certified teachers around the world, LVCY is used at the Mayo Clinic and by the New York City Board of Education. Jim Turner is excited to be offering LVCY to OLLI members in Galveston. His certification in LVCY has given him a new perspective and many new tools to share with you in class. Come and be amazed at just how much fun sitting in a chair can be. Participants will also learn a type of meditation practiced for thousands of years that involves singing the sounds, Saa Taa Naa Maa, along with repetitive finger movements. According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, practicing this non-religious meditation for just 12 minutes a day has been shown to reduce stress and increase activity in the brain to improve memory. This is free to OLLI members and Winter Texans.

Description
Joseph Pilates developed an exercise system (which he called Contrology and we call Pilates) with the goal of developing the body, in balance, in order to fully enjoy life. He intended his exercise regimen to be an integration of body, mind, and spirit. In Pilates Foundations/Level I Mat class you will learn the basic fundamentals of Pilates and apply them to the level I mat flow. We will spend time with the physical practice of Pilates and also include mental simulation of movement and guided imagery in order to improve strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and posture. The class will require the ability to get up and down from the floor and tolerate lying down (back, side, and front) for sustained periods of time. Joseph Pilates developed a system of exercise which he considered a trinity of Body, Mind, and Spirit with the goal of the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure. In this class we will use the Pilates Method combined with The Franklin Method to attempt to achieve these ends. Class size is limited to ensure individualized attention. All fitness levels are welcome with the minimum standard of being able to get up and down from the floor unassisted, and tolerating lying side, front, and back for prolonged periods of time. Monday sessions offer more challenge than Wednesday sessions.

This presentation provides an overview of the problems encountered during the development, testing and integration of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The SSME theory of operation is explained. The SSME problems and solutions discovered during testing at the National Space Technology Center near Bay St. Louis MS (now Stennis Field) will be illustrated. After four years of development and testing the engines were shipped to Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Florida for installation into the Columbia Space Shuttle. At KSC, we encountered a new set of problems. Issues related to communication of the three SSMEs now installed in a space shuttle orbiter for the first time. There were also problems with the SSME data accuracy in the KSC Launch Control Center (LCC). After a year of systems integration issues, we finally had a successful Flight Ready Test (FRT). An FRT is a full multi-day countdown which included loading liquid hydrogen and oxygen into the external tank (ET), ending with three SSME firing for eight and a half seconds. The Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB) were disconnected for the FRT to prevent an accidental launch. After seven years of support, the space shuttle Columbia successfully launched on April 12, 1981.

In recent years, Indo-Pacific lionfish have been found in coral reefs throughout the southeast Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean. While scientists aren't sure exactly how they got there, it's most likely that people dumped unwanted lionfish from home aquariums into the Atlantic off the Florida coast. Because of their voracious appetites, rapid reproduction rate, and lack of natural predators, these invasive lionfish pose a serious threat to coral reefs like the Flower Garden Banks off the Texas coast, with potential long-term consequences for native fish communities, habitats, and entire ecosystems. Visit with us to learn the details of this invasion and take a look inside some lionfish as we dissect them to figure out what they've been eating.

We have all heard “the eyes are the window to the soul”, while that may or may not be true, the eye provides a window to your health. In fact sometimes the ophthalmologist can diagnose a medical condition because the first signs may appear in the eye. Doctors can diagnose hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes and many more diseases by just looking inside the eyes. In fact, diabetes is the primary cause of blindness in adults ages 20 to 74. In this class you will learn about Diabetic Retinopathy and Age-related Macular Degeneration and available treatments for those and other diseases. Also you’ll hear about cataracts and different types of intraocular lenses available today.

If you have always wanted to ballroom dance, join Bill & Judy as they provide an introduction to the Waltz, Foxtrot and Swing and perhaps a few other steps as well. Novice or experienced dancer, learning a few new steps could jazz up your routine. Learn why James Brown said, “Any problem in the world can be solved by dancing.” Even Pope Francis himself has claimed he used to love to do the tango when he was young. Stay fit and flexible, keep alert, and have lots of fun dancing! Find yourself a partner or sign up without a partner. All are welcome.

Do you really know who your neighbors are? The hit television show The Americans is fiction, but the threat of foreign spies planted in this country that pose as Americans is real. We will examine how some of those spies were captured. Spying is as old as the Bible. The ancient Israelites were master spies, gathering intelligence on the Canaanites and their land. Through the centuries countries have learned the art and craft of spying. In these eight weeks, we will examine the best in the world today: the CIA, Great Britain’s MI5/MI6, Russia’s KGB/FSB, and Israel’s MOSSAD/SHIN BET. Now, most agents on the ground have been replaced by cyber spying satellites, the Internet, and your computer. New tricks are added constantly by our enemies. Are we alert? Join Mel for a fascinating look at spies and spooks from the past to the present as we learn the secrets of these agencies, their hits and misses, and what we can expect in the future.

Description
At its concluding meeting, the Why people Read Poems class decided on this project. I look forward to it. Kundera, who writes in French, has enjoyed an enormous vogue in the English-speaking world since the publication of The Unbearable Lightness of Being in the mid-1980’s. He disliked the film adaptations of his early work and stopped permitting them. But we’ll be the judge of that. Born in 1929 in Czechoslovakia, his life took him through Nazi Occupation, Post-War adherence to communism, and the Prague Spring. He’s well-schooled in irony. At our first meeting, we will sample his style and discuss Kafka and Nietzsche (major influences.) Our scrutiny and speculation will cross his 90th birthday. I know OLLI learners sign on from only the purest motives—but, as a bonus, casual references to Kundera will awe your friends. Bring your own copy of the book. OLLI will provide the movie and the popcorn.

People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. This course can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. A workbook and resource materials will be provided. Class size is limited, so you must register in advance for this FREE COURSE.

How does Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga (LVCY) differ from other chair yoga classes? In LVCY any posture found on the mat can be replicated in the chair. Participants will learn a type of meditation practiced for thousands of years that involves singing the sounds, Saa Taa Naa Maa along with repetitive finger movements. According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, practicing this non-religious meditation for just 12 minutes a day has been shown to reduce stress and increase activity in the brain to improve memory.
