Who are these “People?” All of us. Language comes from and, when it’s carefully wrought, strikes to the core of human being. Fortunately there’s a book that makes this clear through particulars. Robin Davidson made it her project as Houston Poet Laureate to invite all in the Metro Area to cite a personal favorite and add a brief statement about why it affected them so decisively. Here is one answer to “Why?”—“Never before have so few words given me such a bold perspective that all humans, no matter what their circumstances, are equal—that life itself, which you were given at birth, is THE greatest gift you can have.” THE BOOK: Houston’s Favorite Poems, ISBN 13: 978-1-944593-05-6. Description
How does Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga (LVCY) differ from other chair yoga classes? In LVCY any posture found on the mat can be replicated in the chair. This allows a participant to experience the benefits of a yoga class without having to get on the floor. It's ideal for anyone looking for ways to improve range of motion, increase circulation and build strength, without the fear of falls, or the challenges of getting to the floor. Taught by over twelve hundred certified teachers around the world, LVCY is used at the Mayo Clinic and by the New York City Board of Education. Jim Turner is excited to be offering LVCY to OLLI members in Galveston. His certification in LVCY has given him a new perspective and many new tools to share with you in class. Come and be amazed at just how much fun sitting in a chair can be. Participants will learn a type of meditation practiced for thousands of years that involves singing the sounds, Saa Taa Naa Maa along with repetitive finger movements. According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, practicing this non-religious meditation for just 12 minutes a day has been shown to reduce stress and increase activity in the brain to improve memory.
