Rebecca Saavedra, Ed.D.
Vice President for Strategic Management
Dr. Rebecca Saavedra is Vice President for Strategic Management. In this role, since 2008, she provides leadership and support to Dr. Callender and members of the Executive Leadership team to develop and implement UTMB's strategic plan and manage its performance reporting. Dr. Saavedra, holds a doctorate in education from the University of Houston, and has worked in health sciences education for more than 30 years.
She began her career at the University of Texas Health Science Cen- ter at Houston before joining the UTMB School of Allied Health (now School of Health Professions) Sciences in 1987, as a counselor for 2 years in Student Affairs. Since then She has served UTMB in a number of roles, including Director of Campus Life, UTMB Student Ombudsman, and Associate Vice President for Student Services. She has served as the co-chair of the UTMB Professionalism Committee since it’s inception in 2002. She was instrumental in implementation of the Professionalism Charter, the Honor Pledge, the Hector P. Garcia Cultural Competence Essay Competition and the UTMB biennial Professionalism Summit. She has been a member of the AAMC Group on Institutional Planning since 2009 and served as the elected chair this year. She has served as a Malcolm Baldrige Examiner and a SACS examiner. She is currently on the board of the Bay Area Boy Scouts, a member of Galveston Rotary and a member of the Assistance League of the Bay Area. She is married, has two successful adult children and two granddaughters.
