Bruises from abuse present in patterns or in areas that are not consistent with common childhood accidents. Bruises found in atypical areas such as the buttocks, hands, or trunk in mobile children and any bruising in nonmobile children should arouse suspicion. Bruises that have impression of various objects commonly used to inflict injury such as belt buckles, belts, looped cords, whips, fly swatters, coat hangers, board or spatula, knuckles or a hand, sauce pans, paddles, hair brushes or spoons, should also arouse suspicion.
