Multiple, white, discrete, 1-2 mm, smooth-surfaced papules seen over the forehead, cheeks, and nose of infants. They are also known as microkeratocysts. To confirm diagnosis, a small incision can be made to reveal the contents which appear as a smooth white ball or cheesy keratinous material
Differential Diagnosis
Molluscum contagiousum may mimic milia but does not usually appear in the immediate neonatal period. Sebaceous gland hyperplasia tends to be more clustered around the nose and a bit more yellow.
Pathophysiology
Milia are tiny inclusion cysts in the epidermis that contain concentric layers of trapped keratinized stratum corneum.
