Caption: Developmental Assessment
Text: Developmental milestones have been established for children through age five years. Recall that normal development can be divided into four components gross motor, visual/motor, personal/social, and language/communication. There is a wide range of normal in each of these categories. Parental expectations for development may be unduly advanced or quite delayed depending on parents to initiate concerns about development may result in delays in detection, assessment, and initiation of therapy. As you begin working with pediatric patients you may want to print your developmental milestone guide, and keep it in your pocket for quick reference. In our clinics we use the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to screen for abnormal development. Ask your resident or faculty to orient you on this and look over the forms that the parent fills out.
