Text: An infant's nutritional needs change dramatically during the first year and nutrition is an important topic during each clinic visit. Infants should continue on human milk for at least the first six months of life. A full year is preferable. Weaning from the breast should be gradual. The mother should not discontinue more than one feeding per day every 3 to 4 days to avoid painful breast engorgement. Weaning from the bottle to a cup is desirable by 1 year of age. Continued bottle feeding puts the infant at risk for milk-bottle caries.
