RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY
Ophthalmology Examination for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
The current guideline for ROP examinations in the UTMB NICU is as follows:
Which Babies need ROP examination?
- Gestational age 30 weeks or less
- Birthweight 1500g or less
- Birthweight 1500-2000g who meet any of the following conditions:
- SGA or IUGR
- On ventilator more than 24h
- Indocin therapy
- s/p ECMO
When should ROP examinaton be done?
Age of first ROP examination: 4 weeks
Any baby less than or equal to 26 weeks at birth will receive the first exam at 29 weeks GA, and followed weekly (revised guideline, 5/2012)
