How will Brian and his Mother get home?

  1. Family car

  2. (Correct) Medical transport van

  3. EMS

  4. Greyhound

  5. Any of the above

Medicaid provides transportation for medical purpose for patients.  This may or may not be necessary for Brian's family.  This requires completion of a document of medical necessity, similar to forms needed for DME.  The hospital social worker can complete the initial application, and can locate the medical transport service which provides transportation to Brian's home town.  Unfortunately, such services are not universally available, and depending on his stability, Brian may travel by family car, EMS, or even public transportation for some future trips.  If a  medical transport service is available locally, Brian's mother or social worker will contact them if needed for future trips, and the authorization will be sent to Dr. Stark for signature.

Congratulations! You have navigated the complex and challenging task of Medical Supervisor for a special needs child.  Flexibility, creativity, and patience are the keys to success in the future, when you become the PCP in Small Town, Texas.  Keep your pens fresh and practice your signature!
