I did my residency in Pediatrics here at UTMB and as chief resident, Pat’s Pearls was originally conceived.  Being trained by The Boss- Dr. Bill Daeschner- motivated me to pass on invaluable information to all those residents who did not get to attend morning report.  I did this via articles and handouts that also included various references.  I am Pat and you will always see me in my Pearls whether wearing a sweat shirt, or on the golf course thus –“Pat’s Pearl’s”.  I have also been blessed with such mentors as Drs. C. Joan Richardson, Barbara Thompson, Trish Beach to name a few.

To The Boss’ dismay I just had to go to Dallas/Plano and work in a private group practice and try my wings so to speak.  By 1998 it was time to return to UTMB to pursue my passion for teaching and guess what?  I guess I do a decent job since in July, I will get my second John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award and I am a member of the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers.

One tool that I developed for usage in clinic for teaching residents and medical students has been a collection of articles that applied to Pediatrics.  I’m sure you can guess the name of the tool.  At one point there were five duplicate notebooks that had to be updated with immunization schedules, etc. and were also used in the Family Medicine clinics.  A 3rd year resident called me to let me know that she kept one of my notebooks for her office.  After the storm they seemed to also disappear and although I have an original, there is only one remaining in clinic on the 7th floor of the UHC.

Finally I get to the reason for participating in ADAPT. With ADAPT, hopefully I can easily keep Pat’s Pearls updated and also not have to worry about the information walking off with another resident. This is also one of those steps into 2010 challenges for someone who is a techno-wanna-be but who fails miserably.

On a different note when I am at home, I am busy “enjoying” my 6 and 7 year old granddaughters but that’s another long story.  I also like reading, golfing and photography.
