Pharmacology and Toxicology - Students

Joseph Shearer, BA

Program: Ph.D.

Advisor: Dr. Marxa Figueiredo

Joseph was born and raised in Minnesota. He received his B.A. in chemistry, with an emphasis in biochemistry, from Macalester College in 2011. Under the direction of Dr. Kathryn Splan, his undergraduate research focused on the metal-binding characterization of the BIR3 domain of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein.

Joseph joined UTMB as a graduate student in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2012. Under the direction of Dr. Marxa Figueiredo, he is studying the effects that environmental toxicants have on the promotion of prostate tumorigenesis. In addition, he is looking at characterizing models of spontaneous liver regeneration in hopes of gaining a better mechanistic view of the effects different drugs and toxicants have on the liver.

Before joining UTMB, Joseph worked as an analytical chemist in the medical device industry, a biology lab teaching assistant at Macalester, and was a three year starter for the Macalester Fighting Scots football team.

In his spare time, he enjoys working out, watching movies and hanging out with family and friends.
