Dual Degree (MD/MS)

Medical students at UTMB have the opportunity to earn the Master of Science degree through a five-year dual degree program. More physicians with such training are needed to translate basic science advances into new therapies and improved methods of disease prevention. 

Dual degree students may select any of the four curricular tracks of the Clinical Science Program.

Dual Degree (MD/MS) Requirements ETC List

  • 36 total credit hours
  • Required courses in:
    • Biostatistics
    • Introduction to Epidemiology
    • Prevention and Public Health
    • Research Methods
    • Ethics of Science
  • Curricular track and elective courses
  • Completion of an original research project resulting in a written thesis (MS)
The recommended plan of study is to schedule graduate studies between years 3 and 4 of the usual medical school curriculum. The graduate year consists of three terms beginning during or after period 3 of the medical school curriculum: Fall (August through December), Spring (January through April), and Summer (April through August).

Students must complete USMLE Step II prior to graduate school enrollment.

Tuition support for students is available on a competitive basis. Contact the program for more information regarding sources and availability of support for the MS year of study.

UTMB Health School of Medicine students may apply to the program through the UTMB Health Graduate School of Biomedical Science and are due by April 1 for fall enrollment.

To apply:

  • Complete GSBS application at
  • Provide three (3) letters of reference
  • Submit current UTMB Health transcript
  • Pay application fee

The application essay and letters of reference should specifically address the student's interest in clinical science and his or her ability to complete the degree.
