Police Officer Minumum Requirements
The applicant must have reached his/her 21st birthday, on date of commissioning.
Must have a high school diploma or passed a General Educational Development test. Applicants with military service must have an honorable discharge.
Must be able to pass physical requirements (vision, hearing, general health).
All cadets successfully complete training at an accredited law enforcement training academy.
Cadets receive housing and per diem for meals while in training at the system training academy.
All equipment/uniforms are provided, ex-cluding footwear.
Lateral Police Officer Requirements
Applicants must possess a current Texas Peace Officer License. Applicants must have no less than a two-year break in service as a commissioned Police Officer in the United States. Applicants must com-plete a short course of instruction on campus law enforcement. The position is security sensitive and selected candidates must pass a thorough background investigation, and a physical agility test.
Currently the UTMB Police Department employs commissioned police officers, public safety officers and telecommunicators along with support and administrative personnel. Officers are commissioned by the University of Texas System Board of Regents and licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement after they have successfully completed the state mandated training curriculum. The primary jurisdiction of peace officers commissioned by the University of Texas System Police includes all counties in which property is owned, leased, rented, or otherwise under the control of the University of Texas System.
Commissioned police officers and public safety officers are assigned to shifts to patrol the campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The number of personnel on duty at any given time varies with the changing needs of the campus.
