Medical indigence Policy Term Definition

Medically indigent patients include persons for whom medical bills would threaten the household financial viability. Qualifying as a medically indigent patient does not require qualification as financially indigent. Medically indigent persons qualify for reductions in their obligations to pay UTMB for medical services rendered. The financial viability of patients in this group must be threatened due to:  (1) catastrophic illness, (2) multiple unrelated illnesses, or (3) other factors.  The eligibility for financial assistance under the Medical Indigence program at UTMB is based on several factors including but not limited to income, dependents, Texas Residency, the patient's outstanding UTMB balance for both Hospital and Physician charges as a percentage of the applicant’s income as well as disposable income.
