Heart Attack:
Length of Stay Rates

The term length of stay (LOS) in health care refers to the period of time (in days) that spans from when a patient was admitted to the hospital to the time they are discharged. At UTMB Health, we use length of stay index to compare ourselves to other hospitals. Lower numbers are better.

UTMB’s length of stay index for patients who have suffered a heart attack is higher than 1. This means that these patients who suffered a heart attack are staying in the hospital longer than expected, with the average stay lasting a little less than six days in 2015.
