Dr. MJ Lee receives VA funding to study risk factors for rural veteran institutionalization using artificial intelligence

MJ-grant

MJ Lee, PhD, BSOT, Research Assistant Professor, Division of Rehabilitation Sciences, has been awarded $87,327 from the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Rural Health Resource Center for her FY 21 year project, "Identifying Risk Factors for Rural Veteran Institutionalization Using Artificial Intelligence," with Co-PI Gail Castaneda.

In order to reduce the institutionalization rate of rural Veterans, the comprehensive examination of all associated risk factors for the institutionalization of rural Veterans is essential. Considering the complexity of patient demographics, social and environmental determinants, and clinical characteristics, AI could be at the forefront of identifying crucial predictors for rural Veteran institutionalization. This project aims to: 1) identify risk factors for the institutionalization of rural Veterans; 2) predict rural Veterans at risk of institutionalization; and 3) disseminate findings to VA stakeholders.
