  • Cancer Prevention Research in Texas (CPRIT)

CPRIT awards grants for a wide variety of innovative cancer-related research and product development and for the delivery of evidence-based cancer prevention programs and services by public and private entities located in Texas. CPRIT's investments position Texas as a world-class leader in cancer research and prevention and connect universities, researchers, physicians, companies, hospitals, and clinics across Texas to forma critical ecosystem of distinguished cancer-fighting talent. Projects funded by CPRIT create high quality jobs, support critical lab infrastructure assets, and help thousands of cancer patients extend their lives.

CPRIT advances its mission by awarding merit-based, peer reviewed grants to Texas-based entities and institutions for cancer-related research through 3 programs:

    • The Academic Research Program is notable for funding projects in critical, but underfunded areas of cancer research, including cancer prevention and early detection research, computational biology and analytic methods, childhood cancers, and hepatocellular cancers.
    • The Prevention Program's guiding principles are to fund evidence-based interventions across the prevention continuum for cancer types that are culturally appropriate for the target population and validated by documented research or applied evidence.
    • The Product Development Program funds projects at Texas-based companies developing novel products or services intended to benefit cancer patients.

  • Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H)
Logo for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health

ARPA-H is a research funding agency that supports transformative biomedical and health breakthroughs--ranging from the molecular to societal--to provide health solutions for all. ARPA-H makes pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies and broadly applicable platforms, capabilities, resources, and solutions with the potential to transform important areas of medicine and health that cannot readily be accomplished through traditional research or commercial activity.

The Agency supports Programs with the potential to transform healthcare and accelerate better health outcomes for everyone. Each Program in the ARPA-H Program Portfolio focuses on a specific problem or challenge that aligns with the agency's wider research and development goals.

ARPA-H also supports research initiatives, challenges, and sprints that aim to rapidly accelerate research innovation in a specific area. These efforts are designed to rapidly move from proposal to funded contracts. Unlike Programs that are driven by a single goal, these targeted investments follow unique funding tracks across a range of topics.

The NIH, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is the world's largest public funder of biomedical research, with an annual budget approaching $48 billion. NIH Grants & Funding supports research at universities, medical schools, and institutions through thousands of competitive grants, contracts, and training programs aimed at improving health and reducing illness. The NIH consists of 27 Institutes and Centers (ICs), each with specific research agendas. The NIH provides funding for research projects (R01, R21, R03), small businesses (SBIR/STTR), career development (K-awards) and training (fellowships/training grants). Applications are submitted in response to specific opportunities, and a two-tier peer review process focuses on the scientific merit, significance, and innovation of the proposal.

The NSF is an independent federal agency that supports basic research spanning all fields of science and engineering. The NSF is organized into directorates and offices that support the various disciplines of science, engineering and education. While opportunities may be found across all NSF Directorates, UTMB researchers may find most relevant opportunities under the Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO), for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE), and STEM Education (EDU).
