UTMB Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Professor, Pei-Yong Shi's, September 2017 publication in the Journal of Experimental Medicine article  - Zika virus has oncolytic activity against glioblastoma stem cells  - has been named one of Top 100 Altmetric articles for 2017.  This is the first time since the university has had access to Altmetric data that a UTMB faculty member has made the list.


With an Altmetric score of 2061, the publication ranked #79 and was mentioned in 281 news stories from the CBS Nightly News to the LA Times to international television, print and internet news sources, 18 blog posts and 196 tweets to almost 250,000 followers.  The article also appeared on 18 Facebook pages, 6 Google+ User pages, 2 Reddit sources and was uploaded to video once. It was the highest scoring article from the Journal of Experimental Medicine and scored in the top 1% of all outputs of the same age.

In the past year, Altmetric has tracked over 18.5 million mentions of 2.2 million different research outputs.  Each year the service selects the top 100 most-discussed journal articles of 2017, ranks them in order of their Altmetric Attention Score on November 15, 2017.
