COVID-19 Funding (06-25-2020)

Jun 25, 2020, 15:22 PM by Melodi Moore
COVID-19 exclusively directed funding is becoming less prevalent as more sponsors merge the funds available with their general grant funds.  The Research Resource Blog will continue to bring you a list of COVID-19 funds available, but we recommend that you also peruse all other posted funding announcements.  If you find a posted announcement that is no longer available, please email us at ResearchOffice@utmb.edu.

Merck Germany

Merck KGaA Darmstadt Germany has issued a RFP that considers projects that leverage technological solutions to be more prepared for pandemic outbreaks or solutions that could help to fight emerging viral infections.

Pre-outbreak R&D Preparedness for pandemic disease:

  • Assessing the priority of pathogens and diseases with epidemic threat
  • Platform technologies to accelerate the development of vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, vector control tools and delivery systems needed to control emerging health threats
  • Innovative technologies for better personal protection equipment for infection control

Response during outbreak:

  • Novel health technologies (e.g. AI, bioelectronics, diagnostics) for early screening of potential infected patients and treatment facilitation.
  • Fast-track identifying, testing and production of effective drugs and vaccines during outbreak

This is an immediate open call and a deadline has not been set.  The grant will be 500,000 €/year for 3 years with the option of extension.

Community Interventions to Address the Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic among Health Disparity and Vulnerable Populations (R01- Clinical Trial Optional)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications to implement and evaluate community interventions testing 1) the impacts of mitigation strategies to prevent COVID-19 transmission in NIH-designated health disparity populations and other vulnerable groups; and 2) already implemented, new, or adapted interventions to address the adverse psychosocial, behavioral, and socioeconomic consequences of the pandemic on the health of these groups.

Deadline(s):  August 28/December 1, 2020

NIA Multi-site COVID-19 Related Clinical Trial Implementation Grant on Aging-Related Topics in at-risk Older Adult Populations (R01 Clinical Trial Required)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for implementation of investigator-initiated multi-site clinical trials (all phases or stages) of interventions focused on specific aging-related issues to reducing transmission, risk, morbidity, mortality, severity, or complications of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Priorities include:
  • Efficacy and safety of interventions that target aging-related biological mechanisms that may influence risk or severity of COVID-19 infection among at-risk older adults
  • Efficacy and safety of preventive and treatment interventions in older patients with differing comorbid conditions that make them especially vulnerable to adverse outcomes of COVID-19 infection
  • Effectiveness of health and/or custodial care practices to reduce transmission risk or improve outcomes of COVID-19 infection in nursing homes or other residential settings serving at-risk older persons, including the development and testing of infection control training procedures for healthcare workers
  • Rapid pragmatic trials in (at least two) health systems, nursing homes, or adult living facilities, ensuring replication across large pragmatic trial sites and leveraging electronic health records to promote quality improvement in physician, hospital, palliative care, and hospice practices to improve outcomes for older patients with COVID-19, especially those with cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD), or underlying comorbidities
  • Trials in at-risk older adults age 65 and older for whom electronic medical records are available and long-term outcomes can be tracked, and in institutions serving those populations
  • Trials in older adults with AD/ADRD, older adults from populations with NIH-defined health disparities, and/or other vulnerable populations (e.g. incarcerated, homeless, living in institutions)
Applications Due:  July 1, 2020; August 3, 2020; September 1, 2020; October 1, 2020; November 2, 2020; December 1, 2020; January 4, 2021; and February 1, 2021.

Funding Opportunity for COVID-19-Related Enhancements to Existing PCORI-Funded Research Projects

PCORI seeks investigator-initiated proposals to address the COVID-19 public health crisis through enhancements of currently funded PCORI research awards. Only PCORI-funded principal investigators with active research project funding contracts are eligible to submit a proposal in response to this announcement.

Please Note: We understand that many current research awards will require adjustments to enable the projects to proceed and to produce meaningful findings. While this announcement is not intended to solicit requests for modifications intended primarily to enable achievement of original, planned aims, we are committed to facilitating these types of modifications and suggest that awardees consult PCORI’s COVID-19 FAQs for guidance and for contact information to address these types of modifications and any related questions.

  • For Engagement Awardees: Click here to access the Engagement Enhancement Funding Opportunity.
  • For D&I Awardees: Click here to access the D&I Enhancement Funding Opportunity.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis through the
deadline of Friday, July 17, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
