Fundamental Science Research on Mind and Body Approaches
(R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research grant applications (R01) to investigate the fundamental science of mind and body approaches, including mind/brain-focused practices (e.g., meditation, hypnosis), body-based approaches (e.g., acupuncture, massage, spinal manipulation/mobilization), meditative exercise (e.g., yoga, tai chi, qi gong), art and music therapies, or integrative approaches combining several components. Studies of pharmacologic approaches exclusively are not included in the scope of this FOA.

Standard NIH Deadlines Apply

Fundamental Science Research on Mind and Body Approaches
(R21 Clinical Trial Optional)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages exploratory /developmental research grant applications (R21) to investigate the fundamental science of mind and body approaches, including mind/brain-focused practices (e.g., meditation, hypnosis), body-based approaches (e.g., acupuncture, massage, spinal manipulation/mobilization), meditative exercise (e.g., yoga, tai chi, qi gong), art and music therapies, or integrative approaches combining several components. Studies of pharmacologic approaches exclusively are not included in the scope of this FOA.

Standard NIH Deadlines Apply

Aging Effects on Osteoimmunology
(R01 Clinical Trials Not Allowed)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health, solicits grant applications that will examine the role of aging in the interactions between the immune systems and skeletal systems in animal models. Research projects that will determine the mechanisms involved in how both aging of the bone marrow niche and immunosenescence impact these interactions, leading to pathological conditions in bone homeostasis, are the focus of this FOA.

Applications Due:  June 15, 2021

Graduate Medical Education (GME): Endocrine Clinical & Research Surgery Fellowship

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Endocrine Oncology Branch's Clinical and Research Fellowship program trains surgeons committed to academic careers. The primary goal of the fellowship is to train academic surgeons. Trainees will develop expertise in basic science, translational and clinical research, and in the surgical management of endocrine neoplasms. The fellowship is a two-year program.

Application Information:  Apply to this program through the NIH Graduate Medical Education Application System. The fellowship program accepts applications and identifies qualified applicants year round. Two positions per year are available for this two-year fellowship program, with a potential option for a third year of additional research work depending on their performance.

Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): High-throughput Molecular and Cellular Phenotyping

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to encourage applications focused on developing novel methods to perform high-throughput molecular and cellular phenotyping in order to elucidate the functional consequences of DNA variation.

First Applications Due:  February 5, 2021

Summer Institute for Research Education in Biostatistics and Data Science
(R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs.

To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this educational activities with a primary focus on:

  • Courses for Skills Development

Letter of Intent Due:              February 8, 2021
Application Due:                    March 8, 2021

Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Synthetic Biology for Biomedical Applications

The purpose of this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is to announce that the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Aging (NIA), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) are encouraging new applications to advance research activities relevant to synthetic biology.

See complete NOSI for Center/Institute deadlines.

Innovative Therapies and Tools for Screenable Disorders in Newborns
(R01 - Clinical Trial Optional)

This FOA encourages research relevant to the development of therapeutic interventions for potentially fatal or disabling conditions that have been identified through newborn screening, as well as "high priority" genetic conditions where screening may be possible in the near future.

Demonstrating the benefits of treatment is often a primary criterion for including a condition on a newborn screening panel; therefore, for this FOA, a "high priority" condition is one where screening is not currently recommended but would significantly benefit from early identification and treatment.

Exploring the Scientific Value of Existing or New Sepsis Human Biospecimen Collections
(R21/R33 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to support efficient collection, banking, and sharing of biospecimens and associated clinical data from critically ill patients, ultimately for use in mechanistic research on sepsis. The goals of this FOA are to determine the scientific value of existing or newly collected sepsis human biospecimen sets as testbeds for studies on human sepsis and to provide guidance on the best practices for collecting, utilizing, and analyzing human biospecimens, thus maximizing their value for the entire sepsis research community.

This FOA invites applicants to submit proof of concept and scale-up studies to determine the scientific value of existing or new collections of human sepsis biospecimens with associated patient health record data. The biospecimens used in this study must be linked to clinical datasets useful for sepsis endotyping/stratification and characterization of disease trajectory, and the use of contemporary cutting-edge technologies in the analysis of these biospecimens is highly encouraged.

See FOA for complete listing of due dates.

Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Research to Address Vaccine Hesitancy, Uptake, and Implementation among Populations that Experience Health Disparities

This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) highlights the need for research strategies and interventions to address vaccine hesitancy, uptake, and implementation among populations who experience health disparities in the US.* Research is needed to understand and address misinformation, distrust, and hesitancy regarding vaccines (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, pneumococcal, influenza, hepatitis B, human papilloma virus (HPV), and herpes zoster) among adults in the United States and territories, especially in populations at increased risk for morbidity and mortality due to long-standing systemic health and social inequities and chronic medical conditions. The purpose of this NOSI is to solicit community-engaged research to: 1) evaluate intervention strategies (e.g., expand reach, access) to facilitate vaccination uptake in clinical and community contexts; and 2) address the barriers to increasing reach, access, and uptake of vaccinations among health disparity populations at high risk and likely to experience vaccine hesitancy.

See FOA for complete listing of due dates.
