2021 Pew Biomedical Scholar Applications

The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in their first few years of their appointment at the assistant professor level.  UTMB is allowed to nominate one (1) person each year to compete for this highly sought-after award.

For 2021 applications, the program has made some temporary changes to their eligibility criteria to provide flexibility due to COVID-19-related research disruptions.  Additionally, like last year, the sponsor has instituted an accelerated submission timeline.  For eligible faculty, the internal limited submission process will be employed to select UTMB's nominee. The deadline for internal submissions is: COB, April 16, 2021.  Please review the internal selection process at the bottom of this post.

Eligibility for the 2022 Award
Candidates must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Hold a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine, or a related field.
  • As of Sept. 1, 2021, hold a full-time appointment at the rank of assistant professor. (Appointments such as research assistant professor, adjunct assistant professor, assistant professor research track, visiting professor, or instructor are not eligible).
  • Must not have been appointed as an assistant professor at any institution prior to June 14, 2017, whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure track. Time spent in clinical internships, residencies, in work toward board certification, or on parental leave does not count as part of this four-year limit. Candidates who took parental leave should contact Pew’s program office to ensure that application reviewers are aware of their circumstances.
    • Please note that eligibility criteria have been temporarily expanded to account for COVID-related lab shutdowns and research disruptions.
  • May apply to the program a maximum of two times. All applicants must be nominated by their institution and must complete the 2022 online application.
  • If applicants have appointments at more than one eligible nominating institution or affiliate, they may not reapply in a subsequent year from a different nominating entity.
  • May not be nominated for the Pew Scholars Program and the Pew-Stewart Scholars Program for Cancer Research in the same year.

Documentation
The following documentation should be submitted via email to Melodi Moore at mdmoore@utmb.edu by the internal deadline:

Grant Proposal (two-page maximum) to include:

  • Title of project
  • PI name, title, department, institution, email (and cooperating institutions if called for)
  •  Abstract of up to 500 words
  • Timeline including milestones for the funding period
  • Letter from the Department verifying eligibility

Routing form
An Office of Sponsored Programs Proposal Routing form must accompany all intramural research grant applications (copies of this form are available at the OSP web page: https://research.utmb.edu/sponsored-programs/proposal-forms.
This form is necessary because many of the Limited Submission grants are submitted directly through a portal after acceptance of the nominee and this allows OSP to know the grant may be coming.

After submission to the Research Services Research Development Specialist, pre-applications will be routed to the Chair of the Grants Review & Oversight Committee to distribute to the members of the GRO most qualified to review. Once a decision is made, the nominee will be notified to submit a full proposal.
