2023 Clinical Scientist Development Award Competition is now open
Pre-proposal applications are being sought from Assistant Professor physician scientists conducting clinical research in any disease area with the ultimate goal to advance human health by driving insights into mechanisms of disease, improvements to patient care and population health, whether in the near or long term.
The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation strongly encourages individuals from groups underrepresented in biomedical research to apply because DDCF recognizes that a diverse workforce that represents the demographics of the population of the United States is better poised to address health issues affecting all communities.

The Clinical Scientist Development Award does not require institutional nomination. This competition employs a two-stage process. Pre-proposal applications will be reviewed and approximately 50 applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

In keeping with the wishes expressed in Doris Duke's will, experiments that use animals or tissues derived from animals, including cell lines, will not be supported by this program.
Important Facts to know:
- This is not a limited competition. Multiple applications from the same university are welcome.
- Only full-time, assistant professors with their first faculty appointment between December 1, 2018 and December 1, 2021 at a doctoral degree-granting institution with an MD (or a foreign equivalent) or a D.O. from an accredited institution can apply for this award. Applicants must have a current medical license or certificate from the state of the university (Texas for UTMB applicants) where their full-time appointment is held.
- Applicants do not have to be U.S. citizens if they meet all other eligibility criteria.
- The award consists of $150,000 for annual direct costs plus $15,000 (10%) for annual indirect costs over three years for a total grant amount of $495,000.
- There is no salary cap on the amount that can be charged against this award.
- Certain exemptions may apply with completion of the waiver form before 5 p.m. ET on Oct. 14, 2022
