Metabolic Phenotyping


Metabolic Phenotyping is a joint resource of the Sealy Center on Aging, Department of Surgery, and the Center for Recovery, Physical Activity and Nutrition that includes the Metabolic Testing Laboratory, Burn, Trauma, and Critical Care Research Laboratory, and the Mouse Functional Testing Laboratory.

Metabolic Testing Laboratory

The Metabolic Testing Laboratory is located on the 10th floor of the Medical Research Building room 10.136 (535 sq. ft.).

It is supervised by Dr. Moro, E: tamoro@utmb.edu, P: (409) 747-2115. 

Analytical Services:

  • Glucose and lactate analyses
  • Frequently sampled oral glucose tolerance testing analysis and interpretation
  • Total nitrogen excretion
  • Hormone and cytokine assays

Equipment:

  • one YSI glucose/lactate analyzer
  • one Total Nitrogen Analyzer (Cosa Instrument Co. Houston, TX)
  • BioRad iMark microplate reader for ELISA assays
  • standard lab items (pipettors, centrifuges, shakers, rotators, etc.)

Burn, Trauma, and Critical Care Research Laboratory

The Burn, Trauma, and Critical Care Research Laboratory is located in the Basic Science Building, rooms 529, 539, and 548, a combined space of approximately 1,700 sq. ft.

It is directed by Dr. Murton, E: ajmurton@utmb.edu, P: (409) 772-0185.

Analytical Services:

  • High resolution respirometry for human and animal studies
  • Additional support for stable isotope analyses
  • Additional support for cell signaling
  • Additional support for RT-PCR analyses

Equipment:

  • Four Oroboros, Oxygraph-O2k, high-resolution respirometers
  • One Glucose/Lactate Autoanalyzers (Stat 2300, Yellow Springs Instruments, Yellow Springs, OH)
  • Two Agilent GC-MSs: 6890 Series GC System-5973 Mass Selective Detector equipped with EI and PCI
  • Functions.
  • One network gas chromatograph flame ionization detection: (GC-FID 6890; Hewlett-Packard / Agilent Technologies, Palo Alto, CA
  • Two Applied Biosystem StepOne Real-Time PCR machines
  • One Bio-Rad and two Amersham gel electrophoresis systems with blotting apparatus
  • One Bio-Rad digital chemiluminescence gel imaging system
  • One Sampler Concentrator Systems (Speed-Vac)
  • One Class II Biosafety cabinet
  • Two Beckman Refrigerated Centrifuges (Beckman Coulter, Fullerton, CA)
  • Two -80°C freezers and four -20°C freezers
  • Three fume hoods
  • Numerous standard lab items (water-baths, centrifuges, microplate reader, rotators, shakers, spectrophotometer, etc.)

Mouse Functional Testing Laboratory

The Mouse Functional Testing Laboratory is located on the 10th floor of Medical Research Building, room 10.124 (350 sq ft).

It is supervised by Dr. Maroto, E: rmaroto@utmb.edu, P: (409) 457-6339

Services:

  • In vivo functional testing in mice
  • In vitro rodent muscle testing Equipment:
  • one Panlab LE 8205 rotarod
  • one Bioseb GT3 grip tester with a trapeze grip
  • one PanLab LE 8710 treadmill
  • one Columbus Instruments voluntary running wheel
  • one Aurora Scientific Model 6650LR (includes: force transducer, dual-mode lever system, hi-power bi-phase stimulator, signal interface and software Dynamic Muscle Control v5.500 and dynamic muscle analysis v5.300) to measure peak twitch force, sarcomere length and peak isometric force.

Samples can be rapidly transferred to the other two Metabolic Phenotyping laboratories for analysis.
