COPD readmissions reduction program decreases 30-day hospital readmission, may increase mortality - UTMB Newsroom, Sept 10, 2020
Researchers from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston have found that while the 30-day readmission rate for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has decreased, the mortality rate has increased.

The use of the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program may help reduce the 30 day readmission rate of COPD patients but it may also increase mortality, according to a new study. UTMB’s Daniel A. Puebla Neira and colleagues looked at data from over 4 million Medicare patients. "Further research is needed to confirm our findings and identify factors contributing to the increased mortality seen in patients with COPD in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services readmission reduction program," Puebla Neira said in a statement.
