Gary Pérez is the Associate Director of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies, UTMB School of Medicine. He enlisted in the US Army after graduating from high school and served as an airborne combat medic with the 82nd Airborne Division. He graduated from the US Army Physician Assistant School as the honor graduate and received his Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Oklahoma. He then served as the Battalion Surgeon for a light armored infantry battalion at Ft. Hood, an Armor Battalion in Korea and finally an airborne infantry battalion in the 82nd Airborne Division. He then transferred to the US Air Force, attended the USAF Orthopaedic Surgery Residency for Physician Assistants and earned his Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska. He finished his military career serving as the Director of Medical Operations for the 720th Special Tactics Group, Air Force Special Operations Command. He began his career in physician assistant education in 2014 as the founding Clinical Director for the Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Master in Physician Assistant Studies Program. He remained with the FIU program until it achieved full accreditation. He came to the UTMB PA program in July of 2019. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants (FAPA) and the Florida Medical Association.
