Department of Biostatistics & Data Science

Presented by:

  • Yong-Fang Kuo, PhD
    Professor and Chair
Department of Biostatistics & Data Science

Dr. Kuo is the Don W. and Frances Powell Professor in Aging Research and the director of the Office Biostatistics in the UTMB School of Public and Population Health. She is the principal investigator of Data Management and Analysis Core for Comparative Effectiveness Research on Cancer in Texas. Her research assesses patterns of care, treatment toxicities, and health outcomes using a variety of large data sets. She also examines health care delivery focused on hospitalist care and its impact, and the use and effectiveness of primary care provided by nurse practitioners in communities and nursing homes. Her research is widely published in medical and health services research journals. Dr. Kuo’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. As a biostatistician, she serves as the director of Biostatistics and Analysis Core for several center grants funded by NIH and Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. She has been a biostatistics mentor for more than 80 trainees including junior faculty, pre-doc and post-doc fellows. Her expertise is in the analyses for comparative effectiveness research, pharmacoepidemiology, and health outcome studies.

  • David S. Lopez, MS, MPH, DrPH
    Associate Professor

Dr. Lopez is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the UTMB- School of Public and Population Health. He is a cancer epidemiologist with a research focus on cancer health disparities (risk, progression and survivorship of prostate cancer and hormone- and obesity-related cancers) and men’s health research (endogenous and exogenous testosterone, erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms). He also studies the role of modifiable factors that influence the risk, progression and survivorship of prostate, hormone- and obesity-related cancers, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome and dietary patterns. A key interest in the research program of Dr. Lopez is to determine the role of race and ethnicity in the interplay between endogenous and exogenous testosterone, obesity, dietary patterns and the risk, progression and survivorship of prostate cancer, hormone- and obesity related cancers. He is an active member of the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SEC), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and American Urological Association (AUA). He is Section Editor of Urological Cancers in the American Journal of Men’s Health.  Dr. Lopez has also taught introduction to epidemiology and epidemiologic methods courses for the last seven years.
