Mission Statement: The purpose of the Galveston Chapter shall be a) to advance the understanding of nervous system, including the part the nervous system plays in determining behavior, by bringing together scientists of various backgrounds and by facilitating the integration of research directed at all levels of biological organization; b) to promote education in the neurosciences; and c) to inform the general public of the results and implications of current research in this area.
Due to increase lifespan of individuals the cases of neurological diseases continues to rise. Our goal is to provide brain awareness to kids in Galveston and surrounding islands, Galveston community and UTMB.
Demonstrations at Galveston’s Own Farmer’s Market
We will continue holding demonstrations of neuroscience activities for children and their parents at Galveston’s Own Farmer’s Market in the upcoming summer season while children are out of school. Through supporting the farmer’s market, we not only reach families and engage them in scientific discussions, but we also connect with another fundamental mission of UTMB to encourage healthy lifestyles. We will use funds to purchase supplies to have activities which include creating brain hats to demonstrate the anatomy of the human brain, making pipe cleaner neurons to explain how brain cells work, and using microscopes and electrophysiology equipment to do real neuroscience experiments on the go.
Easter Egg Hunt Galveston
Last year we held our annual Easter Egg Hunt in Galveston to support and bring the community together in a fun, active way, both encouraging a healthy lifestyle and appreciation for UTMB and our community, as well as engaging people in information about the research we do at UTMB in neuroscience. This also gave members of our organization a platform to talk about the ongoing research at UTMB centered around neurobiological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and substance use disorders
Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease
Each year the SfN Galveston Chapter interacts with other community members by forming a team for the Galveston Walk to End Alzheimer’s disease and supports research funding in neuroscience. We have raised over $1000 each year and formed collaborations with the local Alzheimer’s Association who helps us to advertise all of our events.
