Residency Information Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
The residency program in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston utilizes the University Hospitals of the Medical Branch, with all patients cared for by a single cardiothoracic surgical service which delivers the preoperative, operative and all postoperative care for adult cardiac and general thoracic patients. The two-year Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Program meets the requirements of accreditation by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
During the first year of training the resident learns the principles of managing patients with thoracic and cardiac disease through active participation in their care, both in and out of the operating room. A broad exposure and excellent operative experience is provided in acquired heart disease and pulmonary and esophageal surgery. The residents will be exposed to VATS lobectomy, minimally invasive esophagectomy, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transplant and other facets of cardiothoracic surgery.
Residents will spend 2 months during their second year at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, an extremely busy children’s hospital led by Dr. Ross Ungerleider. Dr. Ungerleider is one of the national leaders in congenital cardiothoracic surgery and has focused much of his career on surgical education.
During the second year of training, the resident will refine operative techniques, especially in cardiac surgery and assume more independent responsibility for general thoracic procedures and perioperative care. Graduating residents have established successful careers in private practice and academic settings.
