Welcome to the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

Jennie Sealy Hospital

The Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) provides the breadth of expertise and services expected from a major academic medical center. Our surgeons deliver comprehensive and personalized attention to patients with a range of cardiovascular and thoracic problems including coronary artery disease, valvular disease, heart failure, aortic disease, adult congenital heart disease, as well as all aspects of thoracic disease including lung and esophageal disorders. We are a regional leader in cardiovascular and thoracic care, serving the entire UTMB Health Network of physicians.

We work in partnership with UTMB Health specialists, referring physicians, patients and their caregivers to diagnose and treat the most challenging cardiothoracic conditions. In addition to their advanced training and research in specialty areas, our surgeons are highly skilled in new technologies such as robotic-assisted surgery and minimally invasive approaches that reduce side-effects and maximize outcomes. We work collaboratively with our vascular surgery colleagues to provide open, endovascular, and hybrid approaches to aortic disease.

The Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery is actively involved in basic science and clinical research. Additionally, we have established partnerships to promote access to patients to allow the patient and families to make informed decisions regarding their health care and options. These partnerships include:

marfan logo

  • Marfan Foundation (www.marfan.org). UTMB is one of two designated sites in the State of Texas by the Marfan Foundation for the evaluation and treatment of patients with Marfan Syndrome and related disorders. This multidisciplinary team includes experts in both adult and pediatric specialties, including cardiac, thoracic, vascular, and orthopedic surgery as well as ophthalmology, cardiology, and genetics.

ACHA logo

  • UTMB is one of the few accredited centers for the surgical treatment of adults with congenital heart disease, recognized by the Adult Congenital Heart Association (www.achaheart.org). The adult congenital heart team at UTMB consists of surgeons, cardiologists (both adult and pediatric), interventional cardiologists, and radiologists who specialize in the complex care of adults with congenital heart defects.
  • Bloodless surgery. We strive to minimize the use of blood and blood products on all our patients with expertise derived from the surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and blood bank personnel. ¬†We work closely with the local and regional Hospital Liaison Committees for Jehovah’s Witnesses to share this experience with patients who cannot received transfusions for religious reasons.
