Frank Receives Cheek Award
Dr. Thomas Frank, PGY-3 resident in the Division of Neurosurgery, was awarded the William Cheek Award at Texas Children’s Hospital. The award is given every June to the outstanding neurosurgery resident rotating on the service at TCH, and includes candidates from UTMB, Baylor, and Methodist. Galveston neurosurgery residents have received the award 3 of the past 8 years.

Lall Receives Thayer Award
Dr. Rishi Lall, Division of Neurosurgery, was one of three recipients of the UTMB Thayer Award. In the photo above, he's being presented with the award by Rosemary Beavers (MS4) at the Neuroscience Grand Rounds held on June 28, 2017. Three UTMB residents were selected by the Osler Student Scholars in the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine to receive Thayer Awards in Excellence in Teaching. Each honoree exemplifies sound scientific knowledge, compassion toward patients, and dedication to learning and teaching.
Desai Featured in Houston Matters Story on Maker Health Space
Dr. Sohum Desai was featured in Houston Public Media's story on UTMB's Maker Health Space on March 16, 2017. The radio story spotlighted the lab's role in helping physicians and staff create needed medical-related items using the lab's tools and resources.
Patel Wins Synthes Cerebrovascular Award
Dr. Achal Patel wins the Synthes Cerebrovascular Award from AANS/CNS Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery for his work entitled, "A novel virtual reality simulation for hemostasis in a brain surgical cavity: Perceived utility for visuomotor skills in current and aspiring neurosurgery residents."
Neurosurgery Residents and Faculty Participate in Savage Race
Neurosurgery residents and faculty, including Juan Ortega-Barnett, MD, Ken Maynard, MD, Randall Zain Allison, MD, Daniel Branch, MD, and Rishi Lall, MD, participated in an obstacle course and race at a Savage Race competition, which was held in November 2015 in Cat Spring, Texas.
Muns Receives TCH Cheek Award
Dr. Alan Muns, PGY-5 UTMB Neurosurgery Resident, has been awarded the first annual William R. Cheek Award for outstanding performance on the Pediatric Neurosurgery service at Texas Children's Hospital. This award was based on nomination and voting from the operating room staff, the staff on the neurosurgical floor, nurses, and nurse practitioners.
Dr. Muns was selected for this award from a field of 9 Baylor, Methodist and UTMB residents and fellows that rotated through Texas Children's Hospital for the 2011-2012 year. He was presented with a certificate and honorarium at a luncheon in his honor.
