UTMB to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 09/14/06http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=0f8a9582c2ae27c6 To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston will host a performance by Lucia and Valdemar Gitanerías Flamenco Artists of Houston. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Friday and will celebrate Hispanic culture through Oct. 14. As an additional part of the celebration, UTMB will present the 2006 Dr. Hector P. Garcia Cultural Competence Award at a luncheon in the Levin Hall Dining Room at 11:30 a.m. Friday. The Hector P. Garcia Cultural Competence award is presented annually in September and a scholarship is awarded to the winner of the UTMB cultural competence essay competition. Two runners-up of the essay competition are also awarded smaller scholarships. The award honors Garcia, a distinguished School of Medicine alumnus who graduated in 1942, and recognizes a UTMB student who demonstrates a commitment to quality health care to all by incorporating cultural knowledge and skills in his or her services to others.
