Galveston County Daily News, Jan. 29, 2007 GALVESTON - I relived Hurricane Rita as Galveston reviewed the events of 2005 while previewing emergency preparedness for 2007. The occasion was the Jan. 18 Galveston conference of the National Council on Readiness and Preparedness, which presented Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas with its National Blueprint Best Practice Award and recognized the volunteer Citizen Response Teams she had created as "the city's most important contribution to a national blueprint for community safety." Looking ahead, Mayor Thomas confirmed that Galveston has contracted for 90 chartered air-conditioned buses to transport future hurricane evacuees from the island to Austin. Each bus will be staffed with a University of Texas Medical Branch medical team, which will remain with passengers throughout their stay at shelters in Austin. Plus, people's pets get to evacuate, too.
