Galveston County Daily News, Feb. 21, 2007 HOUSTON - Saturday was a great day to be a girl, especially for middle-school girls with hopes of careers that require math, science, medical and technology skills. At a time when schools are struggling to get girls interested in the math and science fields, organizers of what was called Super Sci-Tech Saturday at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, found some encouraging signs. Almost 1,000 sixth- through eighth-grade girls from five area school districts took part in the event.. The program's workshops featured heavy involvement by NASA and subcontractors of NASA, medical fields including area hospitals as well as the University of Texas Medical Branch. There were also plenty of veterinary workshops due to intense fascination with animal careers by girls in that age group.
