The announcement came Tuesday from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The Galveston County Daily News reports the job cuts -- through attrition and layoffs -- will affect about 10 percent of UTMB's workforce. The medical complex is facing annual operating losses of about $20 million. The Daily News reports UTMB is trying to build a reserve fund, plus will seek to attract more patients who have private insurance, which can pay better than government programs.
