Cuts imperil out health care training
Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 06/07/06 (no weblink available) Guest Column by Steven R. Shelton: As an academic institution, teaching hospital and community partner, the University of Texas Medical Branch touches the lives of people near and far. Through its many programs and four health science schools, UTMB trains health professionals who go on to practice in urban, rural and medically underserved communities throughout the state and beyond. Three simple but all-important goals form the foundation of UTMB’s training mission: Increase the number of physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other allied health professionals, enhance the diversity of health care providers, and improve the distribution of providers throughout Texas, with an emphasis on underserved communities. UTMB can’t do this important job without help.
