Jail diverson requires more beds for mentally ill

Port Arthur News (Internet / Print) 06/05/06 On any given day at the Community Psychiatric Center there may be one or two people brought in by law enforcement officers on mental health warrants, only to be told there are no beds for them. Officers may then have no choice but to take these citizens to jail. Jefferson County Sheriff Mitch Woods said the issue is more complex than just adding deputies. “In Galveston, they have access to beds at UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch). Montgomery County has a contract with a private facility. We just don’t have those options available. There is no place to take them, that is the issue,” Woods said.
