1,000 babies and counting

A La Porte couple are the proud parents of the 1,000th baby born on Galveston Island since Hurricane Ike slammed into the hospital at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

Weighing in at 6 pounds, 5 ounces, Consuelo Velazquez was born at 7:47 p.m. at John Sealy Hospital.

"All of this has been very exciting," said Eduardo Velazquez, the proud father. "Everyone has been so great to us."

The department of obstetrics and gynecology assembled a special basket full of baby items, including diapers, blankets, sleepers, booties, bibs and bottles to commemorate the event.

The 16-bed maternity unit reopened on Oct. 13.
