Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 05/15/06 http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=a1b49f23093a1bdd “About 2,800 (35 percent) of the city’s (Galveston) older citizens live alone,” reports the Galveston Population, Aged 65+ Years, Report Card, May 2000. And, “More than one in five Galveston elders have an income below the federal poverty guideline. Proportionally, more persons 65+ years of age are poor in our city than in the county, state or nation.” Much is being done in providing food for these 2,800 (35 percent) living alone and the 1,600 (20 percent) living in poverty out of the 8,000 elderly on the island. The Galveston County Senior Services provides home-bound meals to 90 seniors on the island plus funds home providers for another 80 seniors and coordinates a University of Texas Medical Branch special project with student nurses assessing 20 special clients every spring and summer semester.
