Pay Up, Contractors

Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 05/07/06 http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=bfd8496f3cf854f7 Letter to the Editor: After reading the article about John Stobo (The Daily News, April 30) on health care of the uninsured, I could not help but respond. The University of Texas Medical Branch itself is one of the problems with the uninsured. With all the construction that has been going on at that facility, maybe they should start awarding contracts out to the lowest responsible bidder. By responsible, that would include a requirement that contractors furnish their employees with healthcare insurance. It is time to take the burden off the taxpayers and have these contractors step up to the plate. Contractors paid almost $7.5 million in 2005 districtwide for health and welfare for our members. The next time the statewide task force meets, fixing the construction issue would go a long way to fixing the uninsured issue.
