Doctor: Birth alternatives work for some

Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 04/28/06 Obstetrician Alfredo Gei says there’s no question the labor and delivery process in the United States has been “overmedicalized.” Gei was the featured speaker at a meeting devoted to the discussion of studies in the field of alternative and integrative medicine. The session was one in a monthly series sponsored by the complementary and alternative medicine project at the University of Texas Medical Branch. This month’s topic was childbirth. “I was really surprised when I arrived in this country and saw my first delivery room,” said the Italian-born Gei, who came to the United States from Costa Rica in 1993. “All of the monitors and the IVs — it was a lot different from what I was used to seeing.”
