FDA plays watchdog over drug industry

Galveston County Daily News, January 12, 2010

The Food and Drug Administration provides a much-needed service that ultimately results in better health for the American people by serving as a watchdog over the nation’s multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical industry, wrote UTMB Dr. Michael Warren in his It’s Your Health column. “The administration employs a lengthy and very complicated system for drug approval, leading to the criticism that the administration prevents patients from benefiting from drugs still in the testing stage. And while it might be true in some cases, the overall benefit of keeping dangerous drugs out of general use outweighs the exasperation of lengthy testing procedures.”
