The history of the School of Nursing at UTMB is a window on the history of nursing education in this country, wrote John Koloen of UTMB’s Office of Public Affairs. Opening in March 1890 as the privately operated John Sealy Hospital Training School for Nurses, it was the first school of nursing in Texas. “When the school of nursing started 120 years ago, it was expected to train nurses for John Sealy Hospital,” said Pamela G. Watson, dean of the UTMB School of Nursing. “For a long time, students from the school were considered to be ‘the hospital’s nurses,’ but that changed over time. Now, we’re educating nurses not only for UTMB but for the state, the nation and the world.” A similar article appears on NurseZone.com.
