UTMB is one of seven colleges and universities selected by the Federal Aviation Administration to participate in the FAA’s newly formed Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation. The new center is a partnership of academia, industry and government, developed to address current and future challenges for commercial space transportation. UTMB’s Dr. James Vanderploeg, associate professor of aerospace medicine, said research performed by UTMB will address areas of health and safety for the flight crew and passengers on commercial space vehicles. “The next decades of the 21st century will see an extraordinary expansion of commercial space business and utilization,” said Vanderploeg.
