UTMB professor invited by king to Muslim Holy Land

Galveston County Daily News, November 13, 2010

UTMB Health’s Ahmed E. Ahmed has been invited by King Abdullah Al Saud of Saudi Arabia to be his guest this year to visit Saudi Arabia and perform the hajj pilgrimage. “One of the shrines is in Mecca and is called ‘Al Harram Al Sharif’ or ‘The Noble or Grand Mosque.’ That is where the Kabbah is, in its center. The Kabbah is the focal point. All Muslims around the globe look in its direction during their daily prayers. This Mosque (‘Harram’ or ‘Masjid’ in Arabic) and the surrounding streets and buildings all across the city of Mecca will be the hosting place for more than 4 million Muslims during the Muslim Pilgrimage (hajj) holidays next week.”
