Hospitalists are typically internal medicine doctors who practice full-time at the hospital and cover for community physicians. The hospitalist then sends the patient back to his or her primary care doctor, Meyers said. Along with attracting doctors, having enough nurses is a constant point of concern for hospital officials. Chief Financial Officer Larry Sanz said he is considering using recruiting firms to bring in experienced nurses. Typically, Meyers said the hospital advertises, sends representatives to job fairs and looks for layoffs. He said a large downsizing is pending sometime this summer at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
