Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 07/03/06http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=462e8a41d162fc12 Like a shark, the blood bank at the University of Texas Medical Branch is “out for blood.” During a meeting for those in charge of coordinating blood drives in the various UTMB departments, the blood bank rolled out a campaign with an as-yet-unnamed shark as its mascot. “This is going to be the face of UTMB’s blood bank,” said Andree Newport, community relations representative for the blood bank. Newport said the shark would appear at various community events. It was scheduled to make its public debut Friday during a blood drive sponsored by the Ball High School student council. “We want the shark to get out and be seen,” said Christi Hopkins, administrative coordinator for the blood bank. With donations down for the first time in five years, the blood bank is trying to stir up some excitement among prospective donors. “Our goal for this year was 12,000 units, but we’ll be lucky to hit 9,000, which was last year’s total,” Newport said.
