Downtown partnership, GHF on the same page

Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 07/24/06 “It seems to me that we are finally putting a plan together to bring some focus to the downtown area, rather than sit around complaining,” Flores said. The catalyst for this attitudinal change, which has retailers and stewards of the island’s downtown historic preservation effort moving in unison, is a voluminous stack of paperwork being prepared by Lesley Sommer, newly appointed executive director of the Historic Downtown Galveston Partnership, in conjunction with the Galveston Historical Foundation. Sommer is already working on other projects, such as tapping into other funding sources. For example, he is working with Houston transportation consultant Barry Goodman to secure $30,000 from Island Transit’s $3.5 million budget to promote the transit system’s services that connect the University of Texas Medical Branch, The Strand, Seawall and major attractions such as Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn. City council is expected to vote on the measure Thursday.
