Transplant support group to meet
The Texas Transplant Center support group meets from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 2 at the Multispecialty Center at Victory Lakes Town Center, 2660 Gulf Freeway South in League City. Visit www.utmbhealth.com/transplant.

Traffic changes at Specialty Care Center
Effective immediately, access to the Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 2240 Interstate 45 S., in League City, will be limited.
The entrance via Walker Street and the Park and Ride road behind the facility is closed because of construction.
Patients and visitors can enter the complex from the I-45 feeder road. These closures are expected to continue until next year.

Research on campus
As an academic health science center, UTMB is actively involved in clinical trials of all sorts — from basic science to medical technology and new vaccines.

Dengue vaccine study
UTMB is recruiting healthy adults ages 18 to 45 for a dengue vaccine study. The study requires 14 visits through about 10 months. Reimbursement for time and travel is provided.

Anesthesiology research
The department of anesthesiology is seeking healthy volunteers between 21 and 35 to take part in studies to evaluate noninvasive vital sign machines during fluid resuscitation.The study will be conducted at the Clinical Research Center at UTMB and volunteers will be reimbursed for travel and time.Contact Nan Henkel at snhenkel@utmb.edu.

Asthma research
Volunteers are needed for an asthma research study. Individuals might qualify for one of UTMB’s studies if they have a history of physician-diagnosed asthma and are 18 to 65 and a nonsmoker for at least one year. Master teacher
Dr. S. Lynn Knox, professor and vice chairwoman for education and director of the residency program for the department of anesthesiology, has been appointed director-elect of the Academy of Master Teachers. She will take over from Dr. Vicki Freeman on Sept. 1, 2014. The Academy of Master Teachers is an honorary service organization established to embrace a set of standards for excellence in teaching and scholarship in education, to recognize master educators and to provide guidance and mentorship in teaching skills to interested faculty members.

National mentor award
Kathryn A. Cunningham, vice chairman of the department of pharmacology and toxicology and director of the Center for Addiction Research, is the recipient of the Marian W. Fischman Memorial Lectureship award recognizing her many and varied research contributions in the field as well as her mentorship of young investigators of substance abuse and drug addiction.The award is presented by the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the largest and oldest organization for the scientific study of drug dependence and addiction.

Sealy Center on Aging
The center welcomed Elizabeth Lyons, an assistant professor in the Institute for Translational Sciences, who presented “Video game and technology effects on energy balance” for the Pepper Older Americans Independence Center Investigators Lecture.
